Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach, extensively researched and proven effective in treating trauma and various other mental health concerns.

Does EMDR Work?

EMDR is backed by approximately 20 controlled studies, consistently demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing and, in some cases, eliminating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Clients frequently self-report improvements in symptoms such as:

  • Intrusive thoughts & triggering memories

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

While EMDR does not erase thoughts, it helps manage or eliminate the distressing symptoms associated with them. Research also suggests EMDR can be an efficient and rapid treatment for various conditions.

 

Duration of EMDR Therapy

Before starting EMDR, clients typically participate in one to two preliminary sessions to:

  • Assist in treatment planning

  • Determine whether EMDR is the appropriate therapeutic modality

During these initial sessions, your therapist will share research, information, and answer any questions you may have. Once intake, history, and assessments are complete, they will review your therapy goals before beginning EMDR.

Each session lasts between 60–90 minutes, tailored to the client’s specific needs.

What Happens During an EMDR Session?

EMDR therapy follows structured protocols and incorporates various modalities designed to reduce psychological distress.

Factors influencing session length and frequency include:

  • Personal history & experiences

  • Identified therapy targets (past, present, and future concerns)

  • Individual symptom management goals

 

The goal of EMDR is to process historical experiences, addressing distress through Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) using light or tapping techniques.

Processing involves activating a learning state that allows distressing experiences to be examined and stored appropriately in the brain. This technique supports emotional regulation, cognitive restructuring, and neural pathway development, fostering healthier behaviours and perspectives.
